JFF’s policy team offers fresh ideas on education, workforce and poverty alleviation issues that prepare students and workers for the jobs of the future and boost our nation's economy. JFF’s policy experts design and promote policies to help federal, state, and local communities implement and sustain programs that demonstrate the most promise. We synthesize research, evidence, and input from practitioners to inform national policy and debate. 

 

About the Position 

 

The Senior Policy Manager (SPM) will support the work of the JFF policy team to develop and advance federal and state policies, with a particular focus on policies impacting young people who are disconnected from education and workA successful candidate will bring knowledge of policy development as well as strong research, writing, project management, and relationship-building skills. The SPM will serve as a member on the Policy and Advocacy Unit, which leads JFF’s federal and state policy work 

 

What you’ll do: 

 

Project Management  

  • Lead project execution for new grant focused on addressing the needs of youth who are disconnected from education and work 
  • Develop project plans, manage timelines, workflow, communications, production of deliverables, and other aspects of project implementation 
  • Contribute to additional key projects to develop and advance workforce and education policy priorities 

 

Policy Development, Research, and Writing 

  • Conduct research and policy analysis, including helping JFF develop new policy issue knowledge and positioning 
  • Plan, develop, and write issue briefs and policy memos 
  • Work closely with other program units across JFF to coordinate and collaborate on policy development and advancement 

 

Relationship and Grant Management 

  • Manage relationships and meetings with partners, funders, and policymakers 
  • Track multiple grant deliverables and prepare reports to funders 
  • Contribute substantively to design and development of proposals for new work, working with potential funders and colleagues  
  • Communicate effectively in public forums and serve as a representative of JFF’s policy priorities

Qualifications

Who you are: 

  • You possess high energy and passion for JFF's mission, and ability to apply JFF's core values to all areas of your work.  
  • You have a minimum of 5 years of experience in public policy, with a focus on workforce development, education, youth development, racial equity, or other relevant fields.  
  • You have strong project management and organizational skills; you can work quickly and independently, prioritize, and meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.  
  • You have strong research, writing, and editing skills, and attention to detail.  
  • You have experience with or an interest in issues facing young people who are disconnected from education and work 
  • You can synthesize information and communicate ideas clearly and concisely for multiple audiences.  
  • You are highly skilled at managing up and anticipating the needs of others.  
  • You are nimble, intellectually agile, and enjoy jumping into new projects and learning as you go. You enjoy working in a fast-paced environment.  
  • You model inclusive leadership, working effectively with diverse staff, and building and stewarding an organizational culture that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion.  
  • You contributto positive, effective, collaborative cultures and teams wherever you work.  
  • You are a curious and adaptive learner, with a willingness to take in new information, perspectives, and data to inform your work.  
  • You demonstrate a growth mindset and desire to continuously improve in your work and approach.  
  • You have a willingness to travel up to 10% of the time. Travel will be more frequent (up to 25%) for applicants outside of Washington, DC.
