New York Cares is seeking a Chief Development Officer (CDO) to oversee the organization’s development and communications functions. Reporting to and working closely with the Executive Director, the Chief Development Officer will be charged with creating and implementing a compelling strategy for revenue generation, while building and strengthening partnerships with New York Cares’ corporate partners. This person will be responsible for implementing and managing all aspects of New York Cares’ fundraising activities and for creating compelling communications strategies. The CDO will manage a team of 12 development and communications professionals.

The ideal candidate for the Chief Development Officer is an experienced development professional with a proven track record of leading an organization’s fundraising strategy. This is a great opportunity for a leader who brings creativity and innovation to cultivating and stewarding champions for New York Cares.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Fundraising Strategy and External Relationship Building

  • Establish and manage the execution of the overall fundraising strategy for New York Cares  with the goal of achieving or exceeding annual fundraising goals ($10M per year) 
  • Cultivate new donors and partnerships while expanding and deepening existing relationships, including managing the organization's corporate partnership program 
  • Set clear benchmarks for the team, regularly reflect on progress through donor data tracking and analysis, and adjust tactics as necessary to meet revenue goals
  • Develop and implement the necessary processes and systems to ensure that scheduling, logistics, and execution of development activities and events are tracked in Salesforce
  • Serve as ambassador for New York Cares, representing the organization externally and building authentic, lasting relationships with donors and partners

Organizational Leadership 

  • As a key member of New York Cares’ leadership team, support the organization’s vision and strategy and instill a culture of philanthropy in the organization
  • Serve as a key culture carrier internally and externally, modeling inclusive leadership and collaboration 
  • Develop, coach and manage a team of development and communications professionals, holding team members accountable for achieving ambitious goals and ensuring they have opportunities for professional growth and development
  • Coach, support, and encourage the Board of Directors in their efforts to build and strengthen their identification, cultivation, and solicitation of donors (current and prospective) 

Marketing and Communications

  • Deepen engagement across New York Cares’ digital platforms with the goal of optimizing the organization's strong brand to increase supporters and donors 
  • Direct communication strategies to ensure the broadest possible array of audiences are connected to and engaged in New York Cares’ work 
  • In partnership with the Communications team, identify internal and external communications opportunities to strengthen New York Cares’ storytelling 
  • Ensure consistency in brand usage inside and outside of the organization

The successful Chief Development Officer will bring:

  • 10+ years of professional experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role 
  • Prior experience cultivating, soliciting, stewarding, and closing funds from individuals, corporations, government, and foundations in a non-profit setting; ideally with experience diversifying revenue streams at organizations
  • Exceptional relationship building and influencing skills, with the ability to develop trusting relationships internally and externally
  • Experience working in close partnership with a Board of Directors, providing strategic direction and insight as it relates to driving effective fundraising initiatives 
  • Track record of overseeing the hiring, managing and mentoring of a committed team fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace
  • Excellent and persuasive written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate a clear and compelling vision and generate buy-in for that vision
  • Ability to leverage a database to develop donor insights and to inform broader strategy (knowledge of Salesforce preferred) 
  • Passion for New York Cares mission, cares deeply about civic action and community change, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative and diverse environment
