Alliance College-Ready Public Schools was founded in 2004 based on the belief that all young people––regardless of ZIP code, income, ability, or background–– are capable of achieving at high levels. Alliance is now one of the largest and most successful public charter school networks in the nation, operating 28 high-performing middle and high schools serving 13,000 scholars in Los Angeles communities that have been systemically oppressed. In our 16th school year, Alliance has a proven record of success: though 93% of incoming sixth graders come to Alliance reading below grade level, 95% of Alliance graduates have been accepted to college—including 73% to a four-year university. ROLE SUMMARY

At Alliance, we believe that all of our scholars can achieve at high levels.  That’s why we’ve raised our aspirations – to be in the top quartile of all schools in California and ensure our scholars enroll in and graduate from college.  The Vice President, Diverse Learners, is charged with ensuring that all scholars, especially our scholars with disabilities, those learning English, and those performing below grade level, have access to daily instruction and holistic programmatic supports that prepares them to reach their full potential. The VP, Diverse Learners, reports directly to the Chief Academic Officer and leads the Special Education, English Learners, and Intervention teams. 

WHAT YOU WILL DO


Provide departmental leadership, organizational programmatic strategy and direction, and systems-level thinking.

  • Passionately advocate for an All Means All approach to serving all scholars, especially scholar subgroups that have been historically underserved, across staff at all levels of the organization, including site-based leaders and teachers, and Home Office staff; 
  • Play a key role in driving the organization’s multi-year roadmap to address trauma and unfinished teaching that has occured  as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic;
  • Develop a common, comprehensive vision, theory of action, and multi-year strategic plan that serves as the foundation of the Department’s annual priorities to improve the quality and efficacy of scholar supports and intervention; rally a diverse group of staff around the vision, plan, priorities and goals to break down silos and maximize an integrated approach to serving all scholars; 
  • Build and lead a system for regular monitoring and responding to data related to scholar subgroup performance, such as academic proficiency and growth data, reclassification rates for English Learners, and Special Education compliance data; adjust strategy and programs to meet the needs of scholars and schools;
  • Collaboratively partner with other senior leaders, including the Vice President, Teaching & Learning and the Instructional Superintendent Team on a wide-variety of complex instructional initiatives that require strong project management, communication and coordination. 
  • Partner with the VP, College Success and the Vice President, Scholars, Families and Communities on an aligned strategy, including academic and socio-emotional supports, to support every scholar to achieve his/her most rigorous postsecondary opportunity.

 

Oversee the Diverse Learner Teams’ school-site supports, tools and professional development.

  • In partnership with Instructional Superintendents, ensure that the network’s school implementation teams provides high-quality and differentiated instructional support for Diverse Learners, inclusive of Special Education, English Learners and Intervention, to all schools with the goal of increasing learning outcomes for all scholars; 
  • Through regular visits to school sites, provide coaching and support to direct reports and/or other team members who support schools that increase their efficacy in improving instruction, services, programs and/or LAUSD, state or federal compliance;  
  • Build capacity across the system to implement inclusive teaching and learning strategies to support scholar subgroups within core instruction;
  • Ensure that the tools, guidance and training for school leadership teams to implement a high-quality instructional cycle (observation and feedback, student work and data analysis, and intellectual preparation) includes an explicit focus on diverse learners; 
  • Support the design and facilitation of robust professional development, instructional resources, compliance guidance, and other tools for school leaders, school leadership teams and teachers.

 

Lead a large, complex department with attention to team culture and satisfaction.

  • Lead and develop an engaged, diverse and effective team through effective recruiting, training, differentiated coaching, motivating, team building, and succession planning;
  • Model and facilitate inclusive team culture practices, such as valuing diverse perspectives, and working across lines of differences;
  • Manage the professional growth of direct reports to build and cultivate strong leadership skills.

Qualifications

THE IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE/BE:

  • Belief in the mission of Alliance College Ready Public Schools and our commitment to be an anti-racist organization;
  • Commitment to interrupting inequities through honest conversations about race and power to create an equitable and inclusive organization that honors marginalized identities;
  • Leadership and management at the system level overseeing Special Education and/or English Language Learner and/or Intervention support services across multiple schools with a record of achievement serving high-need populations and subgroups (preferred); experience working across teams and schools to influence and implement strategy;
  • Expertise in research-based, effective and innovative models and instructional practices that accelerate the success of scholars with disabilities, learning English and/or performing below grade level academically; knowledge in one or more core content areas (reading or math preferred);
  • Deep experience analyzing and using data (at the network, school, subgroup level) to monitor and drive academic growth;
  • Knowledge of federal and state Special Education and/or English Learner Development (ELD) regulations and effective systems to monitor network wide compliance; knowledge of California Ed Code (preferred)
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of established, entrepreneurial schools with their own unique strengths and needs.  This includes building strong relationships with teachers, school leaders, Instructional Superintendents and other home office and school-based staff; 
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to effectively guide adult learners and lead change management efforts and develop scalable systems;
  • Experience managing people and cross-functional teams, programs, projects and initiatives; motivating a wide variety of stakeholders to embrace and successfully reach ambitious goals;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Strong organization, time management, and follow-through skills; high sense of accountability to the work; and,
  • Willingness to go above and beyond to lead and contribute to the success of a dynamic team committed to a new future for urban education.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required;
  • Five (5) years of full-time, professional experience in a public education system or organization serving high-need population with at least five (5) years in a supervisory and leadership role;
  • Previous experience as a successful school leader serving high-need populations (preferred)

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

In alignment with our commitment to equity for our scholars, Alliance is committed to equity and transparency for our team and offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience and education, as well as an employer-sponsored 403b plan annual contribution equal to 5% of regular earnings, and a comprehensive group health benefits package, including medical, dental and vision. This position is exempt. The compensation range for this position is $122,000 - $160,000 based on years of prior relevant experience.
