(Remote) Temporary Legal Associate

  • Justice in Motion
  • Remote (United States)
Full-Time Administration/Operations Facilitation Legal

Job Description

The Temporary Legal Associate will work closely with the Legal Director for a 12-month period to continue our crucial work for families who suffered separation, as they seek reunification, justice and healing. We believe that nearly 1000 families remain separated and at least several hundred parents who were deported without their children still need to be located and connected with available relief.

The Temporary Legal Associate is a great opportunity for someone with 3-5 years of office-based work experience who will enjoy working in a key administrative role to keep everything moving behind the scenes. Because the Temporary Legal Associate will regularly interact with lawyers in the U.S. and with members of the Justice in Motion Defender Network in Mexico and Central America, the candidate we seek must have professional-level Spanish ability (written and spoken), which will be assessed as the first step of our process.

Note: Justice in Motion does not represent clients directly.

The primary areas of responsibility include supporting Justice in Motion’s collaborative work to ensure families who have suffered separation have access to reunification, justice and healing. This is an important position on a small team, and the duties will evolve as the project needs to shift.

The types of responsibilities may include:

Case Management

  • Engaging in collaborative work with lawyers in the US and members of the Justice in Motion (JiM) Defender Network in Central America and Mexico on cases for families who were separated during the Trump era and need on the ground outreach efforts and access to any available avenues for reunification and reparation of harm
  • Making recommendations to the Legal Director on referrals, assignments, and project management
  • Using case management systems to enter information, update records regularly, run reports, and complete tasks on deadline
  • Maintaining organized collaborative databases and consistently ensuring that records and information are easily accessible
  • Scheduling, leading, and participating in meetings and calls, taking notes and writing memoranda
  • Reviewing and processing detailed case data from multiple sources, including database systems, and from JiM Defender written reports, texts and phone calls
  • Drafting and responding to email and text messages, with an eye towards troubleshooting communication issues so that desired case outcomes are met
  • Editing and completing forms, including case assignment forms and foundational documents germane to collaborations

Project Implementation

  • Developing and implementing training protocol
  • Presenting to a wide variety of audiences from the USA and our program countries
  • Running logistics for JiM team travel, activities and events related to family reunification and access to justice and healing
  • Assisting the Communications team with media requests
  • Interfacing with JiM Defender Network and Policy Advocacy programming
