Job Description

About OpenMind

In recent years, our society has become increasingly divided. Rather than appreciating our differences, all too often, people are viewing the world through an "us versus them" lens. OpenMind works to address these issues by translating the best behavioral science research into practicable, scalable, and evidence-based tools that equip people with the mindset and skillset to communicate and collaborate across differences. Our tools are built for use in many contexts, including workplaces, universities, and communities.

OpenMind is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that was co-founded by the social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, the author of the bestselling books The Righteous Mind and The Coddling of the American Mind. Since launching in 2017, our online program has reached more than 45,000 people in more than 900 classrooms, as well as 100+ organizations and companies, across more than 15 countries.

About the Role

We are looking to bring in an entrepreneurial leader to professionalize and oversee the fundraising function for OpenMind. You will be a revenue partner to our co-founders, Caroline Mehl and Jonathon Haidt, in setting a healthy foundation for OpenMind to scale our impact across the country. You will also play a key role in cultivating a board of directors.

With a budget of $2.5 million less than two years after becoming an independent organization, OpenMind is expanding very quickly. The team is small but growing — we started the year with 5 full-time staff, and will end with 13. To date, our Executive Director Caroline has led the fundraising charge with a small board of four.

Your first-year responsibility will be to directly and indirectly raise $2 million in new and renewed support, with a five-year goal of increasing revenues by several multiples of that. You will also be charged with ensuring that the development function is properly resourced to support this goal. The revenue model is currently a mixture of large grants, a small number of high-net-worth donors and license sales of our eLearning program. Though sales revenue will become a larger mix of the revenue total over the next couple of years, fundraising is the primary driver.

  • Fundraising strategy — craft a multi-year plan for growth and sustainability, leveraging Jonathan Haidt and Caroline Mehl as appropriate

  • Annual fundraising plans — forecast revenue targets, activities, and budgets in close partnership with the Executive Director and Board, and regularly update on progress

  • Foundation relations — manage our current and prospective foundation relationships

  • Donor relations & research — establish meaningful relationships and communication with a portfolio of major gifts donors and prospects

  • Board relations — assist the Executive Director in expanding and supporting our Board of Directors

  • Functional management — with the growth of development revenue, you will define the development organization needs, then hire and manage the team to carry them out

  • Marketing and communications — partner with our Growth team on communications initiatives, including the creation of funding pitch decks, donor reports, positioning for thought leadership, and PR campaigns; represent the organization at event panels, conferences, and media interviews

Hiring Organization

  • 10 years of senior fundraising and leadership experience at organizations with annual operating budgets at or exceeding $3 million
  • Significant experience in researching, closing, and stewarding prospects for six- and seven-figure gifts
  • Demonstrated success in building and managing a highly-skilled staff team towards executing a fundraising strategy and achieving goals while overseeing several time-sensitive and concurrent projects
  • Collaborative, highly motivated and creative thinker who takes pride in their work and goes above and beyond to ensure planned results
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build meaningful relationships with various constituencies
  • Willingness to travel an estimated 5–6 times per year, with each trip lasting approximately 2–4 days
