Primary Purpose: 

The Vice President of Business Development role is an executive position. It leads a team of Business Development staff supporting the revenue and programmatic growth of CWS across all program areas. The Vice President, Business Development will be responsible for supporting the fundraising goals of all program departments and leveraging key relationships and contacts to further the CWS mission. This position will lead institutional business development as a key fundraising and strategic unit. The VP, Business Development will refine, expand and oversee CWS’ joint business development strategy to generate new resources to support our collective mission of, reducing hunger and poverty, supporting resettlement and migration, and expanding relief and development issues with an integrated approach.  

As a member of the President’s Leadership Team (PLT), the VP, Business Development works with their team and other departments to maximize contributed income.  This includes liaising directly on a regular basis with operations, programs, and finance for successful proposal applications.  They are also responsible for institutional relationships and partnerships to develop and execute the organizations’ strategy to develop key institutional partnerships that contribute to new business development and resource acquisition from both public and appropriate private donors, with a goal of bringing in approximately $100 million annually.  

The VP, Business Development sets and oversees the direction for the entire lifecycle of business development: from initial ideas through the entire capture process to successful funding execution. As such, they have responsibility for maintaining and growing the organizations’ overall institutional funding streams via grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts from bilateral, multilateral, and global donors (government, private foundation, and corporate donors). The role also directs the daily operations of a team of institutional donor specialists working directly in support of the strategy. 

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT 

  • Oversee all aspects of the new business development strategy and lifecycle, identifying possible funding sources for new programs compatible with CWS’ mission, values, and strategic objectives. This includes informing and advising on Go/No Go decisions.  
  • Maintain a “bird’s eye view” of the new business forecast and pipeline and ensures the teams achieve revenue targets.  
  • Ensure new business development systems, processes, and strategies are well-designed and managed. Ensure processes are in place to monitor compliance regarding donor reporting requirements, and together with appropriate staff, conduct regular periodic reviews of any program's grant-compliance status in consultation with the Finance Department. 
  • Guarantee the quality of reports to donors and that reports respond to donor priorities.  
  • Supervise teams conducting the scoping/capture for new opportunities and development of successful proposals. Working with the contracts and programs teams, negotiating award agreements and contracts with institutional donors. 
  • Work collaboratively with allied departments, including programs, finance, operations and FDM team to generate new business. Collaborate closely with the programs department to develop cutting-edge technical solutions for health, agriculture, resilience, and other programming. 
  • Build and maintain relationships with peer organizations and institutional donors, including the US government, DFID (UK Aid), multilateral (World Bank, Global Fund and the European Union), and other bilateral donors as well as collaborating with staff managing institutional relationships in other parts of the organization. 
  • Build and maintain relationships with private philanthropy and maintain a “birds eye view” of philanthropic trends, relationships, and data which support CWS strategic engagement. 

OPERATIONAL/UNIT MANAGEMENT 

  • Hire, train, supervise, and inspire staff. Place a premium on supportive, mentoring, adaptive leadership techniques to guide staff members. 
  • Regularly observe and give evaluative thought to the job performance of staff members. Conduct formal performance reviews in accordance with CWS policies. 
  • Provide staff with complete and timely information that relates to their general duties and responsibilities. As appropriate, ensure that staff members are made aware promptly and formally of (a) new or uniquely occurring situations or activities within the organization, and (b) leadership decisions that might affect their work. 
  • Contribute to maintaining relationships with vendors, contractors and consultants, interns, and volunteers. 
  • Administer overall department operations and manages services necessary to support effective institutional relationships and internal operations. This includes systematic analysis of data and provision of reports relevant to all institutional partnerships and revenue generation. 
  • Develop and maintain sound operational and business procedures within the Business Development unit. With Finance Department guidance, formulate and manage the unit’s annual budget. 
  • Model and advocate for the highest level of collaboration and teamwork among colleagues throughout and across the organizations. 
  • Role model of stewardship exercising the highest level of integrity. 

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT 

  • Direct the design and review of relevant internal BD reports to guide revenue acquisition efforts and decision-making. 
  • Use data to improve our joint efforts to improve revenue acquisition. 
  • Share relevant pipeline information with key stakeholders and senior leadership.  
  • Forecast funding sources and trends to position CWS in front of major funding changes or trends.

Qualifications

 

  • Deep commitment to CWS core values and ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners. 
  • Minimum of 10 years of program management and business development experience in the refugee and migration, international development, international health, agriculture, livelihoods, and/or emergencies sector.  
  • Minimum 8 years of experience working within business development. Experience at a senior leadership level in an international not-for-profit setting strongly preferred. 
  • Master's degree in a relevant field or comparable experience. Concentration in public health, agriculture, economic development, or humanitarian sectors preferred. 
  • Demonstrated success in raising restricted funds from institutional donors for international development programs. Experience with USAID required. Experience with DFID, multilateral donors (World Bank, Global Fund, European Union), and other USG agencies a plus. 
  • Proven ability to work with diverse stakeholders, develop effective relationships as well as understand and value different cultures and contexts. 
  • Minimum of 8 years managing agile, high functioning professional teams.
