THE OPPORTUNITY

 

The Director of Finance provides strategic financial leadership and is responsible for financial systems, fiscal management, and alignment of policy with the organization’s values. This position ensures compliance with GAAP and 501c3 tax exemptions and monitors financial stability and liquidity for the organization. The Director of Finance solves complex problems, manages resources, and removes barriers for departments and staff to achieve organizational goals. The Finance Director leads, hires, coaches, and provides direction to Finance staff to execute outcomes within budget and the needs of the organization.

 

Organizational Leadership and Strategy:  As a member of the Management Team, the Director of Finance provides organizational leadership in alignment with organizational values and vision, via the lens of Finance, including:

  • Serves as a visible and core member of the leadership team and contributes strongly to cross-disciplinary teamwork, collaboration, and planning for the organization.
  • Provides counsel to leadership regarding financial matters, prepares talking points and presentations in support of Borealis Philanthropy’s business plans and financial performance.
  • Communicates financial information in a way that acknowledges differentials in privilege, experience, and power, and encourages dialogue, supports individual learning and organizational growth.
  • Represents Borealis Philanthropy with funders and other key stakeholders.

 

Financial Stewardship:  The Director of Finance acts as a steward of the financial resources of the organization, including:

  • Oversight of cash management and investment portfolio.
  • Provides oversight and vision for accounting and financial management processes and systems.
  • Oversees systems and processes for purchasing and contracting for services.
  • Leads development of annual organization budget and financial projections.
  • Prepares and presents financial reports and analysis to the Board of Directors and Finance committee.
  • Works with legal counsel to ensure compliance with 501c3 requirements and other tax matters.

 

Department Vision, Leadership, and Oversight:  The Director of Finance is the internal leader of the Finance Department, including:

  • Develops and regularly reviews policy and procedures, and financial systems to ensure the organization’s needs are continually met.
  • Researches complex financial policy and data, synthesize complex financial, policy, and operational data to guide both the preparation of content and the execution of integrated communications plans.
  • Develops and manages the Finance department’s annual work plan and budget.
  • Supervises, coaches, and mentors finance staff.

 

Organizational Commitment:  As a member of the Borealis staff, the Director of Finance performs certain functions that supports the organization as a whole. This includes:

  • Submitting and approving expense reports and approving timecards by stated deadlines.
  • Attending all staff meetings and required trainings and events.
  • Participating in organizational development and change processes, including serving on committees or special project teams.
  • Model Borealis’ culture and values; align outcomes, practices, and communications within the organization’s culture.
  • Lead special projects and other duties as assigned.

 

Work Environment (Conditions and Physical Demands)

The Finance Director works in a professional, virtual, home office or co-working environment, with occasional local and national travel. This role routinely uses standard office equipment, including laptop computer and cell phone. The employee is generally required to spend long periods of time sitting, typing, and working at a computer. May require the ability to occasionally lift and transport items.

 

COMPENSATION

Borealis Philanthropy offers competitive salaries commensurate with experience and generous benefits. The starting salary range for this role begins at $118,00 - $148,000.

Qualifications

While no one candidate will embody all the qualifications enumerated below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:

 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance, or a related field required, MBA preferred.
  • Ten (10) years relevant accounting and financial management experience, preferably in nonprofit and/or philanthropy.
  • Five (5) years of previous supervisory experience leading staff.
  • Experience with cloud-based accounting software; Sage Intacct and Bill.com strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Experience using systems and tools such as Salesforce, Zoom, Google Suite, Slack, Asana.
  • Track record as a collaborative leader who excels in managing multiple projects, balancing strategic and tactical responsibilities, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced and inclusive work environment.

  • Ability to manage change, work under pressure, manage multiple projects simultaneously both strategic and tactical.
