Just as UMB is committed to improving the human condition, the Office of Community Engagement seeks to leverage UMB’s economic resources and human capital to engage with the community through direct service and systemic change to improve quality of life in West Baltimore and beyond.

The Office of Community Engagement is seeking a new leader to continue to grow and advance the University’s community initiatives. Reporting to the Senior Vice President for External Relations, the Assistant Vice President for Community Engagement and Partnerships will have the following duties:

  • Principal advocate for community engagement and partnerships internally and externally.
  • Provide strong direction and leadership and engage collaboratively with communities and partners to advance the agenda of the University and the community.
  • Interact with the appropriate University and offices within UMB’s seven schools to ensure the facets of the University’s community initiatives and partnerships are identified, implemented, well-coordinated, and integrated into routine and effective university operations.
  • Serve on various workgroups, committees, commissions, etc., within the University and externally to enhance and further the University’s interests. Represent University interests with community organizations and other entities as they relate to new and ongoing initiatives.
  • Engage with communities to listen to their needs and develop best methods for addressing those needs relating to the University’s areas of expertise.
  • Organize and lead the President’s community engagement initiatives including the Community Engagement Center, K-12 Partnerships, and economic inclusion agenda, among others.
  • Develop effective relationships with local government officials and other partners to support the University’s mission.
  • Identify and develop specific legislative/executive branch requests for funding and policies that benefit the communities surrounding UMB as well as UMB-led community initiatives and develop strategies to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Oversee the recruitment, performance, and training of team members and continually review strengths and increase proficiencies of staff to maintain a well-trained, highly involved, and motivated team that works collaboratively to achieve University goals and mission.
  • Ability to manage a complex budget that includes multiple funding sources.
  • Work in partnership with leadership to execute proposals to expand community programs statewide.
  • Ability to convene coalitions of other anchor institutions, public sector representatives and community groups to advance shared goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:  Bachelor’s degree required.  Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:  Ten (10) years of experience in a closely related environment, such as community engagement, workforce development, public health, or community development.

 Supervisory: Five (5) years of direct supervision and management including responsibilities that involve personnel recruitment, training, and professional development related to position.


  • Financial disclosure reporting required by state of Maryland Ethics Commission.
  • Serves at the pleasure of the President/Senior VP/VP/Dean.

  • Understands the audience and is able to tailor oral and written communication for optimal understanding. Is experienced with public speaking and presenting to groups of all sizes.
  • Ability to navigate the higher education system and the various departments of city and state government to advance public health solutions that make communities healthier and support community goals.
  • Effectively communicates with community groups, nonprofit leaders, and neighbors
  • Builds partnerships among UMB faculty, staff, and students to meet community identified needs.
  • Knowledge of how social determinants of health impact individuals and communities.
  • Ability to build teams and empower subordinates to get the job done while providing the support they need.  Must have a history of recruiting and developing exceptional people.
  • Ability to partner with the University of Maryland Medical Center to advance shared goals as they relate to community and population health.
  • Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects necessary to implementing programs and initiatives.
  • Skill in continuously seeking to improve the quality of services and processes of the Office of Community Engagement.
  • Possess excellent relationship building, communication, and influencing skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to interact comfortably, gaining credibility with a wide range of University stakeholders and constituents at all levels of seniority.
  • Thorough knowledge of position requirements. Thorough knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts.
  • Ability to support a mission and strategic vision. Instructional, training, and teambuilding skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships.
  • Skill in consultation and change management.
