COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR FOR THE GREEN NEW DEAL NETWORK

The Green New Deal Network (GNDN) seeks a seasoned, dedicated, and driven leader who can lead our communications team as we support state coalitions and national partners working to turn the 2020s into the decade of the Green New Deal. This is a full-time, exempt position.

About the Green New Deal Network

GNDN unites diverse national organizations and allied local coalitions across states, tribal nations, and in commonwealths & territories to shift narrative, build power, and win local, state, and federal Green New Deal policy change. GNDN member groups work in concert on organizing, policy, and political campaigns to demand and win bold change, and to build grassroots power of social movements.

Position Responsibilities

The Communications Director will be the lead staff person responsible for implementing and evolving GNDN’s overall narrative and communications strategy, centering frontline community voices, GND policy experts, and organizational leaders in the climate justice movement to create real-world impact and change. The Director will interface with a variety of stakeholders including state and national coalition members, collaborate with senior comms and other staff at partner organizations, and manage a skilled team of comms staff and consultants. The nine-person comms staff collaborates with GNDN’s broader staff and coalition members to both drive and coordinate joint efforts as well as support individual member organization capacity, e.g., amplify compelling grassroots spokespersons across multiple media platforms for local, state and national impact. This position will be supervised by the National Director.

The Communications Director will be responsible for the following:

  • Leading implementation and evolution of GNDN’s communications plan and strategy;

  • Managing and supporting communications staff and consultants;

  • Overseeing the development of narrative guidance and messaging for our campaigns that advances our objectives while building and maintaining alignment within our coalition;

  • Contributing to building alignment within GNDN members communications staff and organizing efforts to leverage the impact that is possible when multiple organizations collaborate to drive shared campaigns and message;

  • Driving internal communications within our network that help the network develop and maintain a shared understanding of the work we are doing together;

  • Serving as a member of GNDN’s staff “leads team”—the senior staff responsible for coordinating organizational management;

  • Mapping out and implementing communications strategies and tactics to take advantage of mobilizations before, during, and after events to best foreground our narrative;

  • Managing a paid media program within the contours of the available resources and the political context;

  • Drafting and/or reviewing materials as needed—emails, pitches, op-eds, graphic and video content, etc.; 

  • Monitoring and evaluating the communications operation’s success and challenges, including shared metrics to periodically communicate, internally to the coalition and to external audiences, collective communications and narrative impact.

Compensation and Benefits Package

The annual salary range for this position is $110,000 to $130,000. GNDN will provide a competitive benefit package including health, vision, and dental insurance; unlimited vacation as well as sick leave and personal time off; a retirement plan; and assorted other benefits.

Remote Workplace

The Green New Deal Network staff team exists within a virtual workplace, meaning you can work from anywhere in the continental United States. Travel to in-person events and meetings will sometimes be required. The Green New Deal Network will provide you with a laptop and other equipment necessary for remote work.

Qualifications

Required Experience, Skills, and Characteristics

The Communications Director must have expertise in a wide variety of communications approaches, be highly skilled at working within coalitions and in a movement context, and be an excellent staff manager and team leader as well as collaborator. They should have at least five years of significant national issue or political communications experience spanning multiple aspects of the work and at least five years of management and/or organizational leadership experience. In particular, they should possess the following skills, experience, and characteristics:

  • Strong communications skills — listening, speaking, and written — with a demonstrated record of impact putting them to work to create change;

  • A demonstrated record of excellent staff management and/or organizational leadership, including within diverse teams and with a record of advancing equity as well as other organizational objectives;

  • Deep familiarity with earned, social, and digital media, content production, advertising, United States politics, social movements, and how communications work supports organizing and campaign work;

  • Experience overseeing message development and/or narrative framing in contexts with multiple stakeholders;

  • Demonstrated ability to drive an overall narrative frame through specific moments of opportunity, field organizing, and/or ongoing communications work; 

  • Experience working with frontline organizations and communities;

  • Ability to “manage up” as well as to supervise staff and consultants;

  • Attention to detail, including design presentation, consistency, and accuracy;

  • Demonstrated commitment to progressive values in external-facing work as well as internally within organizations, including but not limited to, racial justice, gender justice, Indigenous justice, disability justice, and LGBTQ justice;

  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally;

  • Outside-the-box thinker and welcoming of creativity;

  • Sense of humor is helpful (it’s just the future of the planet at stake after all!).
