Communications Director

  • On-Ramps
  • Washington D.C., DC, USA
Full-Time Marketing/Communications

Job Description

An estimated 49,000 people died from gun violence in 2021, the highest level in at least 40 years. This uniquely American crisis leaves no community untouched—but it doesn’t have to be this way. From passing legislation strengthening our gun laws to investing in evidence-based programs, there are steps we can and should take to make our country safer.

Led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, our client works to tackle America’s gun violence crisis. A safer America is possible—one where our children can grow up without fear of gun violence—and that is why we’re in this fight. At Giffords, we work to:

Shift Culture

We work to foster a culture where Americans are informed about what makes them safer and inspired to fight for a safer future.

Change Policy

We research, write, and propose policies that make Americans safer and mobilize voters, advocates, and lawmakers in support of safer gun laws.

Challenge Injustice

We hold the gun lobby and any special interests who seek to profit at the expense of public safety accountable.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Director will develop and execute Giffords’ day-to-day and long-term communications, messaging, and media strategy. The Communications Director is responsible for managing the organization’s Press, Social Media, Website, Editorial and Design teams, as well as working with outside partners and vendors. This critical role will work cross-functionally and across all verticals to ensure there is both a proactive and reactive messaging strategy in place to advance Giffords’ mission. A successful candidate will be highly collaborative, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a strong communicator, in addition to bringing communications expertise and a deep understanding of the media landscape, ultimately elevating the issue of gun violence prevention as a key voter issue, at both a regional and national level.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conceptualize and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance the organization’s gun violence prevention agenda nationally and in key states.

  • Lead and inspire the communications team (approximately ten staff, plus consultants) to continually elevate the development and execution of the communications strategy.

  • Align communications opportunities and organizational priorities to amplify Giffords, senior leadership, and surrogates in national and regional media, and oversee pitching spokespeople to TV, radio, digital, and web series on an ongoing basis.

  • Ensure consistency of the organization’s message, priorities and branding across earned, owned, and social media channels and that Giffords creates a diverse range of narratives regarding the issue of gun violence.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across Giffords’ three different entities: Giffords (C4), Giffords Law Center (C3) and Giffords PAC to strategically advance various efforts and campaigns.

Hiring Organization

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • At least eight years of experience in communications, in a national context, with broad and diverse professional experience in politics, government, issue advocacy, public relations, public opinion, marketing, and/or other communications functions.

  • Deep experience in effectively managing a team and variety of outside consultants; able to motivate and inspire teams in the face of challenges.

  • Extensive experience with media relations and an understanding of the media landscape that will be critical to the management of staff who will drive the tactical work.

  • Understanding of messaging and storytelling across a diverse range of audiences, approaching communications work through the lens of inclusivity.

  • Shares Giffords' commitment to racial equity, social justice, and ensuring an inclusive organizational culture.

  • Experience working in politics and government settings, highly preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to be flexible.

  • Organized and able to reassess priorities with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

  • Notably collaborative teammate, capable of managing relationships internally and externally.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, sense of humor and ability to work well on a team.

  • Organized and able to reassess priorities; able to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

  • Commitment to ending America’s gun violence epidemic through effective laws and regulations.
