ABOUT THE POSITION:
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Director will develop and execute Giffords’ day-to-day and long-term communications, messaging, and media strategy. The Communications Director is responsible for managing the organization’s Press, Social Media, Website, Editorial and Design teams, as well as working with outside partners and vendors. This critical role will work cross-functionally and across all verticals to ensure there is both a proactive and reactive messaging strategy in place to advance Giffords’ mission. A successful candidate will be highly collaborative, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a strong communicator, in addition to bringing communications expertise and a deep understanding of the media landscape, ultimately elevating the issue of gun violence prevention as a key voter issue, at both a regional and national level.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Conceptualize and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance the organization’s gun violence prevention agenda nationally and in key states.
Lead and inspire the communications team (approximately ten staff, plus consultants) to continually elevate the development and execution of the communications strategy.
Align communications opportunities and organizational priorities to amplify Giffords, senior leadership, and surrogates in national and regional media, and oversee pitching spokespeople to TV, radio, digital, and web series on an ongoing basis.
Ensure consistency of the organization’s message, priorities and branding across earned, owned, and social media channels and that Giffords creates a diverse range of narratives regarding the issue of gun violence.
Collaborate with colleagues across Giffords’ three different entities: Giffords (C4), Giffords Law Center (C3) and Giffords PAC to strategically advance various efforts and campaigns.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
At least eight years of experience in communications, in a national context, with broad and diverse professional experience in politics, government, issue advocacy, public relations, public opinion, marketing, and/or other communications functions.
Deep experience in effectively managing a team and variety of outside consultants; able to motivate and inspire teams in the face of challenges.
Extensive experience with media relations and an understanding of the media landscape that will be critical to the management of staff who will drive the tactical work.
Understanding of messaging and storytelling across a diverse range of audiences, approaching communications work through the lens of inclusivity.

Experience working in politics and government settings, highly preferred.

This is a full-time position based in our Washington DC office. This position requires the ability and willingness to travel up to 20% of the time and interest in staffing occasional weekend and evening events. As the safety and wellbeing of our team is of utmost importance, Giffords has been following strict COVID protocols including mostly remote work with occasional in-person meetings and events. This is a hybrid position working one day a week in our Washington, DC office, and four days a week remotely.
The salary range for this position is $165K-185K with the exact salary determined based on experience. Competitive benefits include employer funded health, dental, and vision insurance; health, transit, and parking flexible spending accounts; 401k plan with 4% employer match; 25 days of PTO annually plus paid week vacation between Christmas and New Year’s; and ten paid federal holidays.
