This innovative and forward thinking leader will understand the urgency of the moment, the geopolitical landscape, and avenues for driving change. They will move rapidly to align our climate team to have real impact through strategic campaigns, movement building and people power.
The Climate Campaign Director is responsible for the development of the long-term GPUS climate campaign strategy, ensuring it aligns with the goals identified in the Greenpeace network's Global Framework and that relevant campaign projects advance that strategy in measurable ways. The Director will serve as the public face and voice of climate work for Greenpeace US and as a strategic advisor and thought partner to program leadership and project teams across the organization. They will collaborate with Greenpeace colleagues across the global network to inform and advance an international climate agenda. Additionally they will understand the necessity for climate action to be interwoven with and translate across broader social movements, including inextricable interconnectedness to environmental justice. This position reports to the Campaigns Director.
The Climate Campaign Director will:
- Develop and communicate a compelling vision and strategy for our climate work, including medium- and long term (5+ years) campaign strategies
- Ensure that all Greenpeacers, at any level of the organization, have a clear understanding of our climate campaign strategy and the theories of change behind it.
- Cultivate the capabilities of teams and individuals for prioritization and data-informed decision making, with a sharp strategic analysis of how to leverage opportunities for the greatest impact
- Serve as a strategic adviser to project teams and Programmatic Management Teams on climate issues. Ensure projects are aligned with long term campaign strategies. Provide regular hands-on support during project design and launch, while empowering project teams to drive implementation
- Work closely with project leaders to evaluate results and adjust approaches as appropriate
- Work with other campaign directors including the Democracy and Oceans as well as the Engagement Team, Communications Team and senior leaders to create a compelling and cohesive narrative for Greenpeace's work and specifically how the climate campaign contributes to that broader narrative
- Maintain awareness of issues and trends in environmental, racial justice, social change, and democracy movements to identify emergent trends and disruptions within the context of ongoing campaign activities
- Maintain a broad network of allies, experts, and high level contacts
- Build relationships with foundations and other high level donors and help develop fundraising content
- Represent the organization publicly, including media interviews, speaking events, and writing
- Work with international colleagues to develop projects that fit global and US goals
- Ensure a strong commitment to the organization's values of embedding justice and promoting equity, diversity and inclusion both internally and externally
- Expertise of the contemporary US and global climate issue landscape, with a proven record of movement building and the ability to navigate complex policy landscapes. Relevant scientific and policy background is a plus, but not required
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex and diverse teams to achieve ambitious results, ideally in areas with a focus on climate change through a people power and social justice lens
- Sound judgment and willingness to make tough and strategic decisions when confronted with difficult choices
- Able to quickly build trust, credibility, and goodwill with a wide range of audiences, including staff, allies, supporters, and Board members, and across lines of race, gender, class and other identities.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from other departments, demonstrated value for other organizational functions
- Can thoughtfully navigate issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion and brings a deep commitment to advancing these values. Able to identify ways that bias impacts management and can drive solutions to lead to unbiased outcomes
- Demonstrated ability to think both strategically and creatively, using data and audience understanding to design people-powered campaigns and adapting to nimbly in responsive situations
- Strong communication skills - ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a wide range of people both verbally and in writing; public speaking skills; ability to make effective presentations and communication across different cultures and contexts
- Strong project leadership and project planning skills to enable the delivery of projects to time, to budget and to deliver clear objectives; ability to build and manage teams
- Demonstrated understanding of effective online communication to diverse audiences, across many channels; ability to represent Greenpeace and our work effectively to media, Greenpeace donors and others as needed
- Ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships with diverse stakeholders
- Able and willing to travel as needed
