Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Congressional Progressive Caucus Center’s Director of Development is responsible for prospecting for potential donors, developing, managing and deepening relationships with institutional and individual donors, and strengthening communications with supporters, activists, advocates and movement partners to expand funding opportunities. The Director will lead foundation relations, donor communications, and development operations. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Development is tasked with the following duties and responsibilities: 

  • With the Executive team, develop plans and monitor progress toward annual and multi-year revenue projections, including identifying prospects and setting funding targets from specific foundations, labor unions, movement organizations and individual donors to maintain and expand support for Congressional Progressive Caucus Center 501(c)(3) and Progressive Caucus Action Fund 501(c)(4) programs and projects.

  • Conduct prospect research through networks and online tools to identify and make connections with potential new funding sources.

  • Directly manage funder portfolios, including seeking and setting meetings/calls and tracking cultivation and solicitation opportunities. Schedule and execute donor and prospect calls and meetings in support of the Executive Director. 

  • Prepare leadership team and key program staff for meetings with donors and prospects, developing background/briefing materials, planning, coordinating and participating in meetings.

  • Develop and draft, in collaboration with staff and the Executive Director, proposal narratives for individual and institutional funders, labor unions, movement groups, activists and other donors, based on their areas of interest and the activities they may be willing to support. 

  • Draft and edit emails, agendas, presentations, program overviews, work plans, strategy documents and other marketing and collateral materials, in collaboration with the Executive team and other key staff. 

  • Track progress with key staff on grant-funded outcomes and deliverables to assemble donor updates and reports.

  • Schedule, monitor, plan and produce all required grant reports, in collaboration with relevant staff and the Executive Director.  

  • Ensure donors are acknowledged and thanked in a timely manner using language that is compliant with the organization’s tax exemption status.

  • Schedule and track all foundation, labor, movement organization, individual engagements and online donor interactions in integrated constituent relationship management systems, overseeing vendors to ensure that databases and other fundraising tools (prospect research, email marketing, printing, etc.) are properly implemented to track donor and prospect interactions, schedule future engagement, and adhere to best practices in privacy and data hygiene..

  • Develop and execute outreach campaigns to spur greater engagement and to develop giving opportunities, ensuring that institutional and individual donor communications are calendared and integrated with relevant communications about advocacy actions, activist alerts, and general Congressional Progressive Caucus Center and Progressive Caucus Action Fund news to properly balance programmatic communications with funding appeals.  

  • Oversee general development operations systems and collaborate with staff on workflows for proposals, reports and donor-oriented communications, regularly informing and updating Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director on development operations workflows and systems. 

  • Develop policy and programmatic initiatives for potential new relevant areas of work, in light of organizational capacities, funder interest and opportunities.

  • Edit and proofread policy and programmatic documents for external audiences. 

  • Other duties, as assigned.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS

The Director of Development will report directly to the Executive Director and collaborate with other senior staff in fundraising activities and work collaboratively with all staff to strengthen the relationship of development functions to all aspects of organizational development. S/he will also work closely with the Chief Operating Officer, Deputy Chief Of Staff, Director of Communications, and management and program staff as needed.

LOCATION

This position is remote until the Congressional Progressive Caucus Center’s office reopens. At that time, this position will be based in our Washington, DC office.

Qualifications

  • 7 to 10 years of relevant experience and a BA/BS

  • Ability to write effectively and compellingly about the Center’s work and to prepare complex written proposals, reports and related materials, as well as in appeals, social media, and web communications focused on engaging and motivating donors

  • Superior skills and attention to detail in grant application, reporting and cultivation responsibilities 

  • Desire and ability to build and maintain successful relationships with foundations and individual donors, to influence and engage diverse audiences and to build long-term relationships to achieve fundraising success

  • Ability to manage multi-faceted projects and perform well independently in a relatively small organization with a fast-paced, multitasking environment

  • Collaborative style, combined with the ability and desire to work in a team-based environment

  • Outstanding time management and organizational skills

  • Sound judgment and ability to exercise discretion when dealing with confidential information regarding donors and operations

  • Familiarity with email marketing and web/social media marketing best practices in a non-profit or advocacy environment

  • Knowledge of constituent relationship management (CRM) and prospect research tools and skill in overseeing fundraising vendors (CRM, prospect research, etc.) 

  • Passion for the mission of the Congressional Progressive Caucus Center and the progressive movement, with a full understanding of its policy priorities

  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule when that may be required, possibly including some weekend, early morning or evening commitments
