Status: Exempt, Full Time

Location: Seattle, WA.

Accounting manager: $87,968 - $94,033 

Senior Accounting Manager: $99,100-$106,433

**Due to COVID-19 this role is currently working primarily remotely. Once FareStart’s office fully reopens, this role will have regular onsite responsibilities in downtown Seattle. **


FareStart is a nonprofit organization in Seattle, Washington that transforms lives, disrupts poverty, and nourishes communities through food, life skills, and job training. We help people overcome employment barriers by teaching them the work and life skills they need to succeed in food-based jobs — and in life.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, FareStart has provided millions of meals to organizations across the Seattle area that serve youth, adults, and families who are low-income or experiencing food insecurity.


As the Accounting Manager, you will report to and collaborate with the Director of Finance to maintain accurate and complete financial records for FareStart. You will lead general accounting operations in the areas of accounts payable, accounts receivable, client funds, and payroll. You will oversee a team of accounting staff. This role requires developing and maintaining accounting procedures and processes with an eye toward process improvement and ensuring accounting transactions are completed accurately and timely.


  • Oversee month-end close for accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
  • Identify and implement accounting process improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures and internal controls for accounting operations.
  • Oversee accounts, ledgers, and reporting system ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory/funder requirements.
  • Support the preparation of accurate and timely monthly financial reports to management and the Board of Directors.
  • Recruit, mentor, train, and manger a team of individuals with varying levels of experience.
  • Work with the Controller and other accounting staff to maintain accurate accounting and administrative records for agency activities.
  • Prepare routine financial and ad-hoc reports for operational review and decision making as needed.
  • Provide accounting assistance for managers as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Hiring Organization



  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, and six (6) or more years of progressively responsible accounting, management, and supervisory experience; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience in nonprofit management or fund accounting.
  • Experience performing general ledger reconciliations including resolving discrepancies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and experience with accounting software.
  • Proficient and experienced in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. Ability to work with customized databases and technology and to conduct internet research.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team, within diverse teams and environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and comfortably with audiences of different backgrounds and experiences.
  • Ability to display sensitivity, tact, and responsiveness in various situations and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to listen, give and receive feedback in a productive and professional manner.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to adapt communication based on audience and purpose with inclusivity. Ability to disseminate information effectively to appropriate levels.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks and requests and meet deadlines in a professional manner.
  • Ability to evaluate problems and effectively solve them in a timely manner. Ability to respond to concerns with empathy and inclusivity.
  • Ability to delegate responsibilities, work with others, and coach employees to develop their full potential. Provide helpful, behaviorally specific feedback to others. Regularly meet with employees to review their development progress and express confidence in their abilities to be successful. Engage in open and honest communication.
