Launched in 2000 out of a Bronx public high school, DonorsChoose has since raised more than $1 billion to fund over 2 million classroom projects from over 725,000 teachers at 87% of all the public schools in America, overwhelmingly in historically underfunded schools due to economic and racial inequity. DonorsChoose is seeking a strategic, collaborative Director, People Operations (DPO) to design and manage its benefits, HR systems, people data, payroll, and compliance. As a People and Talent team leader, the DPO will be responsible for ensuring that the HR practice is built to support the organization's 175+ employees across 11+ states by introducing best in class programs/policies and modern operational infrastructure that enable an expanding footprint to support organizational goals and a hybrid workplace. Additionally, the DPO will work closely with the broader people and talent team to uphold the organization's commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion, embedding equitable processes and actions into the people operations function.

The Director will report directly to the Vice President, People and Talent and manage one direct report. The Director will lead strategic projects on behalf of the team, but the core work is detailed below.

In this role, you'll manage:

Benefits Strategy & Execution

  • Define and execute a strategy for all benefits and perks and make recommendations to ensure DonorsChoose offers competitive, equitable, and innovative benefits that set it apart as an employer of choice
  • Develop and implement proactive communication strategies to maximize the value of our benefits to the employees and organization
  • Lead our annual renewals, evaluating provider performance and costs, and partnering with our brokers to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Manage the implementation of new benefits, and build effective communications and training that educate our team on how to leverage our benefits
  • Manage benefits administration with an eye towards accuracy and efficiency, overseeing day to day maintenance and troubleshooting any issues
  • Work closely with benefit vendors, brokers, and consultants to ensure a high degree of customer satisfaction and superior administration

HR Compliance

  • Oversee the design, development, and integration of smart, scalable programs, policies, systems, and procedures that support the employee lifecycle and the desired culture of DonorsChoose while ensuring legal and regulatory compliance
  • Monitor and ensure compliance for all HR matters ensuring we remain compliant with all federal, state and local laws in all of our locations — e.g. employee leave programs, pay rules, time off, unemployment, health and safety standards, EEO/Affirmative Action, FLSA, Employee Handbook, Employment Agreements, etc.
  • In partnership with the VP, People and Talent, develop and execute against a state expansion strategy and remote work policies that are scalable and meet the organization's talent needs
  • Connect with employees on disability, leave of absence and accommodation related questions

HR Systems & People Analytics

  • Lead our HR systems and data strategy to ensure we have modern, best in class tools and HR tech stack that drives innovation and support automation across all people practices — we currently use Greenhouse, Namely, Lattice & CultureAmp
  • In partnership with the VP, People and Talent, and the broader People Team assess current people systems, with an eye towards equity, accuracy, and simplicity
  • Develop systems and processes to ensure employee data is up to date, accurate, and connected to other People tools (eg. surveying, performance management, compensation); help explore new technology to support the broader People & Talent team
  • Participate in and lead responses to internal and external audits and enforcement actions relating to HR policies and practices
  • Track and analyze HR metrics in support of the People & Talent team goals (e.g. turnover rates, time to promotions)


  • Manage payroll process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness

  • You are a thought leader on people operations issues and the rapidly changing landscape of HR regulations; you stay abreast of trends and laws and take the lead in formulating responses. You have a fundamental understanding and experience in the administration of employee benefits and a working knowledge of compliance with ERISA, IRS laws, and current regulations pertinent to health plans.

  • You have at least 7-10 years of relevant work experience of progressive people operations. 3+ years of experience leading and supervising others, including managing remotely.

LOCATION: The majority of the DonorsChoose 150-person team works from the NYC area, including from our office which is open for optional use. Strong preference for a candidate who is NYC-based or within a few hours by car/train to make use of the office when needed to support the team. Open to talent across the US.

If a candidate is not based in NYC, they should be willing to travel on an as needed basis, at minimum 4-6 times a year.

Compensation for this role is competitive with equivalent roles at other nonprofits of our size.
