About Uplift Center for Grieving Children

Uplift Center for Grieving Children (formerly The Center for Grieving Children) was founded in 1995 by the Bereavement Program at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and incorporated as an independent nonprofit in 2000. Uplift offers therapeutic peer support groups for thousands of children and teens annually in grades K-12th who have experienced the death of someone significant in their lives due to any cause. Peer support and a caring adult presence helps to reduce the feelings of isolation and loneliness that children often experience after the death of a loved one. 

 Our Mission

Uplift Center for Grieving Children serves children grieving a death to heal and grow through their grief while strengthening families, communities and professionals’ understanding of how best to respond to their needs. 

Position Summary

Reporting to the board of directors, the successful candidate will be deeply invested in Uplift Center for Grieving Children’s future. This individual will leverage relationships to steer Uplift Center for Grieving Children into a new era while maintaining its core values and commitments. The Executive Director will inspire Uplift Center for Grieving Children’s internal and external stakeholders with a shared vision and collaborate with the board and team to realize the organization’s mission while maintaining a fiscally sound and stable organization.

 

The Executive Director is the day-to-day manager of Uplift Center for Grieving Children and oversees a growing team of professionals. The selected candidate will have strong managerial and leadership skills and understand the needs and opportunities associated with a forward-thinking organization.  

The Executive Director will take the organization to the next level of success and impact. 

Roles and Responsibilities

Executive Leadership

●        Engage with the board and team in activating Uplift Center for Grieving Children’s revised mission, vision, and values and implement its programming aligned with these commitments; 

●        Initiate, develop, and manage both a plan and budget for all organizational activities; 

●        Develop and cultivate relationships with local and national partners, evaluating potential partners for new projects with integrity and strategy that focus on augmentation and expansion; and 

●        Maintain high standards that ensure a creative environment and positive, safe workspace for all team members; building trust, establishing and maintaining professional respect, and ensuring professional growth and development of staff. 

 Community Engagement and Partnership

●        Foster positive interactions with like-minded organizations at the local, regional, and national levels by participating in convenings, joint activities, and professional associations’ boards, committees, and panels; 

●        Inspire donors through exceptional and timely communication; and 

●        Build trust-based relationships that engage people with Uplift Center for Grieving Children’s programming and support the organization’s diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments. 

Management and Administration

●        Lead the team in conceiving, developing, and implementing strategies that ensure the organization achieves the highest degree of programmatic quality, maintain a sustainable business model, and build reach and community connection; 

●        Cultivate and foster a supportive work environment driven by integrity, inclusion, collaboration, innovation, and excellence; 

●        Sustain deeply collaborative and trust-based working relationships with all team members; 

●        Effectively communicate with the board of directors, reporting regularly on the organization’s activity, and support board members in fulfilling their roles in governance, development, policy, and ambassadorship; 

●        Engage in the organization’s revenue development and expansion activities, coordinating with the board and development team to cultivate and steward donors (individual and institutional), and actively take part in development and fundraising activities; 

●        Provide day-to-day, hands-on oversight and supervision to the growing Uplift Center for Grieving Children team; and 

●        Promote the professional development of team members as valuable assets to the organization, recruiting and retaining the highest quality team members.

Workplace

It is expected that the candidate will reside within the Philadelphia region and come into the office in East Falls, Philadelphia at least four days per week.

Qualifications

Experience and Qualifications

Senior leadership experience in an organization of similar size and scope, with demonstrated growth and a successful track record in development and management, is required. Qualified candidates will possess demonstrated success in planning and managing people as a function of their role. 

Knowledge and familiarity with the Philadelphia, regional, and national social service communities is desired. Financial literacy is preferred. The person filling this role must be accomplished, resourceful, and understand the space in which Uplift Center for Grieving Children operates. Preference will be given to candidates with shared and/or lived experience with the community that Uplift Center for Grieving Children serves.

Compensation and Benefits

Uplift Center for Grieving Children offers competitive compensation, with an expected salary range between $110,000 – $120,000. The benefits package includes health (100% employer paid) dental (paid by employee), an employer-matched (3%) retirement plan and extensive paid time off and leave through the year.

 

Workplace

It is expected that the candidate will reside within the Philadelphia region and come into the office in East Falls, Philadelphia at least four days per week.
