Job Description


The VP, Fund Development position will manage the strategic plan and implementation oversight and management to drive revenue and increase donors from direct marketing, major, planned, corporate & foundation giving and distinguished, relationship events for AltaMed Foundation President. All fundraising must align to AltaMed Health Services Corporation Strategic priorities and mission, i.e., improve patient outcomes and reduce health disparities. This role requires collaboration with the AltaMed Foundation’s Board of Trustees, with guidance from the CAO, to ensure fundraising goals are met. The VP of Fund Development will provide direction to the Development department in order to drive growth in existing channels while also developing new funding relationships with the Foundation President, Foundation’s board of trustees, academic institutions, corporations, and private donors; as well as expand their fundraising portfolio. The fundraising portfolio is comprised of corporate, major, employee donation and private donors. Internally, the VP of Fund Development and Community Support will partner with the Government Relations and Civic Engagement, and AltaMed’s Grant’s department to coordinate and align fundraising efforts.


  1. Develops and implements an integrated fund development plan to advance AltaMed’s initiatives and to broaden awareness of AltaMed programs and priorities, increasing and enhancing visibility and impact across key stakeholder audiences, and providing resources to achieve strategic goals.
  2. Analyzes current state of the business, identify risks and opportunities, and develop go-forward action strategies and work plans to provide a competitive advantage.
  3. Works collaboratively with stakeholders, executives and subject matter experts to analyze competitor strategies to identify fund development opportunities, while taking into consideration external threats and challenges on such opportunities.
  4. Maintains awareness of health care and aspirational market trends, and create a fund development strategy that will allow AltaMed leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level donors and key influencers.
  5. Identifies challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external fund development opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to implement initiatives.
  6. Serves as fund development advisor to AltaMed’s leadership, AltaMed Foundation President and Board of Trustees, and AltaMed Board of Directors.
  7. Actively engages, cultivates and manages high value donor relationships supporting AltaMed’s programs, special events, and other projects. Serve as a spokesperson and lead point person in high value donor interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization.
  8. Recruits and leads the fund development team to support the development and execution of the fund development strategy.
  9. Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  10. Mentors and develops staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.
  11. Establishes and monitors staff performance and development goals, assign and promote shared accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustments.
  12. Establishes performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate the efficacy and mix of the fund development program.
  13. Collaborate with Vice President of External Affairs and Vice President for Communications with donor communication strategies; including print and web communications.
  14. Collaborate with cross-functional fundraising efforts with Civic Engagement and Grants departments.
  15. Provide general oversight, guidance and direction to the Development department operational activities.
  16. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Hiring Organization




  1. Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a health care or related field.
  2. Master’s degree highly preferred.
  3. Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in fundraising experience implementing a variety of development strategies, with substantial competency in federal, foundation and corporate grants required.  Combined experience/education may substitute for minimum education/experience.
  4. Proven track record of cultivating strong, long-term high value donor relationships.
  5. Verifiable experience in creating and implementing diverse, effective fund development plans, and demonstrated ability to exceed fundraising goals.
  6. Established in philanthropy communities, such as institutional funders or private wealth management.
