Facing History and Ourselves is a global education non-profit organization that challenges teachers and students to use lessons of history to stand up to bigotry and hate.

To meet the needs of a growing organization, HR has transitioned from a team of generalists to a group where team members are focusing on defined lanes of activity.  Our focus is "Talent" and the primary areas of activity are: "Talent Acquisition", "Talent Management', and "Talent Growth & Development." Underlying all areas are the core values of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Growth Mindset, Teamwork, and Respect. The "Talent" focus underscores the positive mission of the team in relation to hiring, retaining, growing, and servicing the best staff possible. This will enable us to create a model workplace that reflects the communities we serve and that is inclusive and engaging for all. The Director of Talent and Growth Development is an exciting opportunity to pioneer a new position that consolidates functions that were shared in the past.

Who We Are: Facing History and Ourselves uses lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate. For more than 40 years, Facing History has provided a transformative experience for educators and their students, and the mindsets and skills we foster — empathy for others, critical thinking, moral reasoning, and sense of agency — help to create a world guided by knowledge and compassion. The world is in dire need of this kind of education and our goal over the next three years is to increase our impact as an organization by expanding and deepening our engagement with educators, schools, and districts.

Facing History operates from 9 offices in the United States, Canada, and the UK, includes 185+ staff members, and maintains a budget approaching $40 million. The success of Facing History’s strategic plan will be driven in part by increased investments in staff, both current and new. We are implementing HR strategies to ensure that our staff have the skills needed to meet our goals, that our culture is built on the contributions of everyone within a climate based on positive values and our managers have the skills needed to lead in ways that fully engage and tap the potential of their teams.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • In partnership with the Chief Officer, Finance and Talent, create and implement a strategy for talent growth and development.
  • Develop and implement a new metric-based performance management system and serve as the primary partner for all supervisors, promoting their ability to set clear goals and provide regular and consistent feedback that leads their staff to success.
  • Support the implementation of a process that defines sequential career steps and professional development for staff advancement
  • Coach managers through employee relations issues using a growth mindset.
  • Oversee staff learning beginning with orientation, ensuring that leaders of each department and office maintain individual staff development plans.
  • Oversee organization professional development and training.
  • Stay current with best practices and thinking around talent growth and development.
  • Provide and implement an overall vision for the Talent Development area at Facing History leading from a growth mindset perspective.
  • Support and coach supervisors across the organization.
  • Build professional development and performance feedback systems that promote staff engagement, self-management, accountability, and the advancement and retention of talent.
