Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Research Assistant or Research Associate in its National Security and International Policy (NSIP) department. The incumbent will focus primarily, but not exclusively, on U.S. policy toward China.

Among other responsibilities, this position will help senior staff advance American Progress’ agenda toward critical issues in the U.S.-China relationship. American Progress is focused on analyzing U.S. policy toward China (PRC) through the prism of how the United States addresses transnational challenges with regard to five crosscutting priorities:

  • Strengthening health and ending the pandemic
  • Building an economy for all
  • Tackling climate change and environmental injustice
  • Advancing racial equity and justice
  • Restoring social trust in democracy

In this context, the NSIP department’s work in addressing these transnational challenges is driven by American Progress’ mission to improve the lives of all through bold, progressive ideas as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but the country. This position will work on a wide range of issues related to these transnational challenges and how the U.S. and China interact relative to them.   

The ideal candidate will have proficient Chinese language, research, writing, and analytical skills. Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact well with high-level policy professionals, both internally and externally, are required.

Responsibilities:

  • Support original research and analysis on American Progress’ priority China-related policy questions, with a particular focus on the transnational challenges China confronts and the opportunities those offer for U.S. policy, particularly with respect to climate and environmental policies.
  • Help develop and implement strategies to improve policy outcomes. This will include efforts to shape products that contribute to those ends—including reports, issue briefs, and columns—op-eds, related events, and other activities.  
  • Assist in coordinating and planning meetings and events.
  • Assist with general editorial duties and digital presence.
  • Maintain expertise in assigned policy areas.
  • Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders in the areas relevant to CAP’s transnational challenges, and in fields of national security and international policy, with a focus on China-related policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in international relations or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. An advanced degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is a plus. 
  • At least one year of professional experience on China-related policy issues for the Research Assistant role; at least two years of professional experience on China-related policy issues for the Research Associate role.
  • Demonstrated interest and some expertise in the PRC political system and U.S. policy toward the PRC.
  • Ability to communicate with Chinese counterparts in spoken Chinese and proficient written Chinese (i.e., email and text communication) is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated strong skills in research, writing, analysis, presentation, and communication.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced working environment.
  • Willingness to take independent ownership and initiative.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well on a team.
  • Ability to travel internationally and demonstrated experience in planning and supporting international delegations and senior leadership.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.

The Research Assistant position has a minimum salary of $52,000, and the Research Associate position has a minimum salary of $55,000.
