ABOUT THE POSITION

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Chief Advancement and External Relations Officer (CAERO) will serve as a key leadership team member with responsibility for fundraising, marketing communications, and external engagement. The CAERO will manage and strengthen the infrastructure needed to grow BCS' revenue, visibility, and impact through major gifts, grants, special events, corporate and foundation support, branding, and communications. They will lead and grow the External Relations and Advancement (ERA) team. The CAERO will also work closely with the Board of Directors acting as the staff liaison to the ERA Committee and providing support to board members as they take on active fundraising roles.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Organizational and Team Leadership

  • Engage collaboratively as a member of the Executive Team to ensure that fundraising, marketing, and communication objectives are in line with agency goals and that greater agency and ERA resources are mutually supportive to advance BCS mission
  • Manage ERA team members including Grantwriter, Communications, Data Management, Graphic Design, Volunteer Engagement and management of external consultants
  • Assess the structure of the ERA department, develop and implement recommendations to improve effectiveness and collaboration with other departments of the agency
  • Serve as liaison to the Board's External Relations and Advancement (ERA) Committee. Strategize with the Committee to leverage board resources and grow solicitation efforts and engage full Board on communications and marketing efforts to generate support and increased access to resources
  • Participate in BCS strategic planning; monitor/ensure progress toward attainment of goals leveraging data to set goals and drive strategic decision making

Fundraising and External Relations

  • In collaboration with the CEO, develop and refine a comprehensive fundraising strategy to increase revenue to efficiently support ERA staff and meaningfully support BCS' mission, with the goal of expanding annual philanthropic funding from $2M to $10M over the next five years
  • Act as a lead fundraiser for BCS, securing capital from multiple sources (e.g. corporations, foundations, government, major donors)
  • Expand BCS' base of donors, across a range of sectors and funding types, with a focus on foundations, corporations and major gifts
  • Build the infrastructure necessary to ensure prospecting, funder cultivation and timely submission of all philanthropic proposals and reports
  • Drive research of funding sources to help position BCS ahead of major funding changes or trends
  • Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors, including BCS annual participation in the annual New York Times Neediest Cases Campaign

Marketing and Communications

  • Manage consistent and effective communications to donors, prospects, volunteers, and other stakeholders to promote and report on BCS' programs and activities
  • Ensure effective press engagement and maintain positive relationships with key press contacts
  • Lead branding efforts to ensure all BCS materials adhere to a style guide that positively reflects the agency's brand
  • Develop strategies to ensure that volunteers effectively support client service programs and have ample invitation to support fundraising events and campaigns

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization
  • Demonstrated success in a fundraising/development function with experience leading event planning, philanthropic and/or individual donation cultivation
  • Strong alignment with the BCS mission; an unwavering commitment to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion, with an ability to model BCS values and foster an inclusive and respectful workplace
  • Ability to construct, articulate, and implement an annual strategic development plan
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide audience
  • Demonstrated strength in organizational, leadership and mentoring skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team player able to productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside of the organization
  • High energy and passion for BCS' mission is essential
  • Knowledge of donor database management – preferably Raiser's Edge software
  • Tangible marketing experience with knowledge of social media platforms and best practices is a plus
  • Bachelor's degree required

The salary range for this position will be within the $175K - $185K range annually, based on commensurate experience. There is also a generous benefits package including medical, dental, vision, paid time off, and retirement accounts with matching.
