Job Description

The Portfolio Manager is a key role in supporting the success and effectiveness of Coleman Family Ventures (CFV).  This role acts as a trusted strategic partner to CFV Leadership and grantees by building relationships, understanding issue areas, measuring & reporting progress and advising on areas of opportunity.  The Portfolio Manager is a connector who continually builds their network and utilizes connections to further the work of grantees, external partners, and the CFV organization.  This role reports to Chief of Staff.

 

Responsibilities:  

  • Manage a diverse portfolio of grantees and network partners by building relationships and developing credibility
  • Collaborate with grantees and external partners to maximize grant impact through effective relationship building, regular check-ins, partnership facilitation, coaching, site visits, identifying opportunities, etc.
  • Implement monitoring and evaluation framework to achieve strategic goals for grantee partners and CFV.  Capture, analyze and summarize trends, applying learnings across investments to inform strategy iteration and future investments 
  • Write and produce clear, concise, and insightful briefings, messaging, reports, email updates, and other materials to clearly articulate and communicate portfolio updates to leadership and CFV team
  • Map and stay current on the landscape - researching opportunities, trends, gaps, etc. – and share with CFV colleagues for one or more of CFV’s priority focus areas: oceans and climate, early childhood and economic development, healthcare and reproductive rights, and community strengthening in NYC
  • Develop a perspective on strategies and opportunities, grounded in evidence and aligning to our broader work, for CFV in these focus areas
  • Build and maintain a network of implementers, experts, peers, and others in the assigned focus areas to inform our knowledge of the sector and guide our work
  • Represent CFV’s strategies, partners, and impact among peers and with other stakeholders to advance our grantee partners and impact
  • Support pipeline development by identifying potential investees aligned to CFV priorities and framework, tracking leads, stewarding relationships and conducting diligence to determine fit for CFV’s portfolio
  • Ensure alignment with trustees’ perspectives and priorities, and keep leadership updated along the way through written analyses and regular presentations of findings and recommendations, both formal and informal
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to take on new roles and tasks that emerge as CFV grows and as our trustees’ priorities evolve
  • Other projects and duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree and 8+ years of relevant post-graduate work in a relevant field (social impact, government/public sector, or investing)
  • Exposure to ocean-based climate solutions, holistic and place-based initiatives for early childhood and economic development and/or experience in health sciences and reproductive rights a plus
  • Excellent written and oral communication
  • Ability to synthesize large quantities of information and distill into relevant analysis
  • Prior experience providing briefings to senior leadership on issue areas, presenting clear and concise information to support strategy development and decision-making
  • Ability to partner effectively with not-for-profit organizations, funders, issue-area experts, and leaders from research institutions
  • Exceptionally organized, detail-oriented and able to manage multiple complex tasks and prioritize as necessary
  • Proactive, can-do attitude with ability to troubleshoot and problem solve
  • Flexible work style with the ability to manage tight deadlines and shifting priorities
  • High level of professionalism with attention to maintaining sensitive and confidential information
  • Experience working within small teams and/or in an evolving organization 
  • A learning mindset and willingness to modify approaches as new information is available
  • Extremely proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software; experience with CRMs or grants management software a plus
