About the Organization

Relaunched in 2019, Unite America and its 30+ person team has grown to be a leader in the election reform movement. Over the past five years, we have mobilized $70+ million dollars from a cross-partisan community of philanthropists to achieve dozens of policy victories across the country.

Recent victories where we played a leading or a major supporting role to win: a major anti-gerrymandering campaign in Virginia; a first-of-its-kind top-four nonpartisan primary system in Alaska, and a ballot initiative in Nevada to implement Alaska-style reforms in that state. About the Position

What You'll Do

Reporting to the Executive Director, and serving as a member of the executive team, the Head of Program (HOP) will manage our largest function and leverage our pooled fund, state/national partnerships, and program team to drive state level policy victories - while, ensuring that our programmatic initiatives align seamlessly with the organization's priorities and contribute significantly to advancing our mission.

The ideal candidate for this position is a strategic thinker with a proven track record of managing multifaceted advocacy-related programs and delivering results. They should bring a wealth of experience in executive leadership, program management, movement building, and strategic investment/resource allocation, coupled with a deep commitment to Unite America's mission and cross-partisan approach. The successful candidate will be adept at driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and translating strategic vision into impactful outcomes.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Strategy & Executive Leadership:
  • Provide strategic leadership and vision ensuring alignment with the organization's overall goals and mission
  • Further develop and refine the organization's overall strategy for how we leverage our resources to win policy change
  • Partner with the Investor Relations team to tell the story of our impact and optimize donor engagement
  • Represent Unite America at meetings, public forums, and convenings to build and maintain strategic alliances and foster deep relationships with potential donors within the local, state, and national landscape
Overall Program Management:
  • Lead the Program functional area, which is focused on making the right bets in our investment portfolio, maximizing the chance of success of state campaigns, and improving long-term conditions for victory through movement-building
  • Oversee a $50m+ grantmaking portfolio across 50+ grantees; making investment recommendations by overseeing the sourcing of opportunities and diligence on potential investments
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators to measure and assess the success and impact of portfolio investments
  • Work collaboratively with the finance team to develop and manage program budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility and accountability
Manage Core Workflows:
  • Campaigns: Develop and execute effective strategies for state legislative and ballot campaigns, providing real-time guidance, support, and connections to partners
  • External Affairs: Engage with candidates, elected officials, and coalition partners in service of state campaigns
  • Partnerships: Drive strategic alignment among national reform partner organizations to advance policy objectives
  • Policy: Build the evidence-base for election reform through original and commissioned research, and providing real-time policy support to state campaigns
Team Leadership:
  • Lead and inspire a high-performing team of 14+, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability
  • Manage two direct reports who oversee our Campaigns & External Affairs and our Policy & Partnerships teams, respectively
  • Provide guidance and support to team members, promoting professional development and growth

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

  • 15+ years of experience, with at least 5+ years in a senior management role
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully managing a national advocacy program that include state campaigns, movement building, and strategic resource allocation
  • Proven ability to align programmatic efforts with organizational priorities and mission
  • Strong alignment and commitment to Unite America's mission, vision, culture, and values
  • Entrepreneurial, self-starter with strong critical thinking skills and proven ability to effectively manage the details, recognize trends, analyze data, and make strategic programmatic recommendations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of systems change strategies
  • Strong relationship builder and networker with ability to quickly build rapport and establish trust and respect among colleagues, our grantees, partners, and other stakeholders
  • Track record of developing, managing, and driving multi-faceted projects and initiatives
  • Exceptional leadership qualities with the ability to inspire and lead a high-performing team
  • Solutions oriented with proven track record of identifying gaps and recommending improvements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to represent Unite America in many environments
