Faith in Public Life and Faith in Public Life Action are seeking a Policy and Government Relations Director to lead FPL/A’s work to enact policy aligned with our mission and to build relationships with elected leaders and their staffs. This role will be crucial in implementing FPL/A’s federal and state policy agenda to advance the moral imperative for a just, inclusive and equitable country so everyone is able to live into their full humanity. FPL/A utilizes a grasstops theory of change that engages, mobilizes, and amplifies influential faith leaders to move our campaign strategies – so the person in this position will work closely with our organizing and communications teams, in addition to holding their own body of work. We eagerly seek an experienced, entrepreneurial, and collaborative colleague to envision and lead our work in policy and government relations at the federal and state level.

Job Responsibilities

Develop and Execute the Organization’s Policy Strategy

  • Oversee and manage the organization'sorganizations’ federal and state policy agenda, from conception to implementation, in support of and aligned with FPL/A’s strategic objectives
  • Work closely with the CEO and the Senior Leadership Team to develop/envision truly comprehensive approaches to policy in line with FPL/A’s theory of change
  • Provide leadership in navigating federal and state legislative and regulatory landscapes, identifying opportunities, monitoring shifts and changes, and mitigating risks related to relevant policy changes
  • Represent FPL/A’s viewpoints and positions with lawmakers and legislative staff through effective communication with diverse audiences
  • Cultivate and maintain strong partnerships with government officials, policymakers, and stakeholders to influence decision-making and promote the organization's interests
  • Develop and execute comprehensive government relations and policy advocacy strategies aligned with FPL/A’s objectives and priorities
  • Lead and/or coordinate coalitions or partnerships with sector peers, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders to amplify FPL/A’s voice and impact within organizational policy priorities
  • Prepare and present compelling advocacy materials, including policy briefs, white papers, presentations, and testimonies for legislative hearings or public forums as needed/invited
  • Represent the organization at relevant events, conferences, and public forums to advocate for our positions and build strategic partnerships
  • Provide strategic guidance to senior leadership on government relations strategies and potential implications of policy changes on the organization
  • Ensure FPL/A's commitment to DEIA is reflected in our policy and government relations strategy

Collaboration and Management

  • Manage program budget
  • Act as a feedback loop among various internal and external stakeholders
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams to align advocacy efforts with organizational goals/strategies – particularly with organizing and communications teams
  • Collaborate with development team to help funders understand FPL/A’s policy agenda and to help develop proposals/reports for funders as needed
  • Ensure and maintain FPL/A’s compliance with all lobbying requirements, in partnership with Chief Operating Officer and external counsel

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate significant leadership in internal organizational initiatives and group settings as they arise
  • Attend regular program director huddles, which promote and encourage clear processes and procedures, strong project management (including adherence to goals and deadlines), leadership development, staff autonomy and creativity, and overall organizational culture
  • Actively participate in staff meetings, retreats, caucuses, and social activities to build strong relationships across the organization

Qualifications

Job Qualifications

  • At least seven years of experience in the nonprofit sector, at least five of which have been directly in policy and/or government relations
  • Proven track record of successful advocacy and relationship-building efforts in reproductive health & equity, democracy, civil rights, and/or similar policy areas
  • In-depth understanding of federal legislative and regulatory processes and working familiarity with state and local processes
  • Strong network and established relationships with key stakeholders, policymakers, and government officials in reproductive health & equity, democracy, civil rights, and/or similar policy areas
  • Understanding of the complex landscape of American religious life and how it intersects with reproductive health & equity, democracy, civil rights, and/or similar policy areas
  • Familiarity with activities conducted by legal frameworks for 501c3 and 501c4 organizations and an ability to understand the legal and compliance frameworks that govern this work
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences – including faith-based and secular partners, stakeholders in federal and state legislatures, and federal agencies – with the ability to articulate complex issues persuasively and effectively
  • Strategic thinker with strong project management skills
  • Highly relational work style with strong organizational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, independent thinking and problem solving
  • Ability to engage and respond on a professional level to a broad range of stakeholders
  • Passion for the mission of the organization and to our two core campaign focus areas of promoting/expanding reproductive health & equity and preventing/combating political violence
  • Demonstrated commitment to FPL/A’s organizational values (found here) and to applied diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Appreciation and enthusiasm for cross-team collaboration
  • Ability to travel as needed to support organizational needs
  • A Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Law, or a related field is very strongly preferred; a Master’s or JD degree is preferred but not required
  • Location in the Washington, DC, area (DMV), in a hybrid working context
