Job Description

The Planned Giving & Estates Attorney is responsible for overseeing approximately 250 open estates to ensure timely and complete receipt bequests to Hadassah. Additionally, the Estates Attorney works with donors and their advisors and collaborates with major gift staff and volunteers to secure planned gifts.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee approximately 250 open estates in which Hadassah is a named beneficiary of wills, trusts and other deferred planned giving instruments.  Analyze estate court pleadings including inventories, accountings, statements of assets, and estate tax returns.  
  • Track estates from receipt of notice to receipt of final distribution to Hadassah.   Ensure timely receipt of anticipated distributions from estates, including following up as needed (via phone, email and/or letter) with proper parties.  
  • Review waivers, releases and receipts; fiduciary accountings; account statements and other key documents and communicate with fiduciaries and attorneys as appropriate.
  • Identify issues potentially affecting Hadassah’s interests and recommend strategies to senior PG&E staff.  
  • Work with donors and prospects and their attorneys to secure future bequests to Hadassah.  
  • Provide sample bequest language to prospective legacy donors. 
  • Work collaboratively with PG&E staff, including Manager of Estate Administration and legal assistant, and other Philanthropy staff and volunteers. 
  • Answer questions from Hadassah field staff and Hadassah chapters regarding bequests.
  • Be familiar with life income gifts and handle prospect and donor inquiries using PGCalc software.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Education, Experience

  • J.D. and admission to Bar (any state). 
  • At least 2 years’ experience in trusts and estates either in a law firm or non-profit organization, Must have experience with probate and trust administration. Experience with charitable bequests, non-profit organizations, and estate litigation a plus.
  • Superior communication skills, with the ability to communicate well with donors, attorneys and fiduciaries, and legal and accounting professionals. 
  • Knowledge of estate planning vehicles, including CRATs, CRUTs, revocable trusts, IRAs, and life insurance. Knowledge of charitable gift annuities a plus.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, sensitivity, and discretion when interacting with prospective donors and their representatives
  • Commitment to Hadassah's mission and values, with an understanding of how PG&E contributes to the overall success of Hadassah
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate well with volunteer leadership and staff
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Salesforce or another CRM
