Job Description

About the Organization

Black Girls* Code (BGC) partners with schools, companies, local organizations, and dedicated volunteers to offer resources that build the skills and relationships our girls need to thrive. Our eyes are ever-set upon launching one million Black girls into tech by 2040.

*Identity is a spectrum of color and gender. If you want to learn tech and rectify that less than 2% of tech jobs are held by Black women, then BGC is for you.

These values guide, focus, and inspire our work:

  • BELONGING for Black girls, where they can be themselves and expect nurturing and acceptance
  • INNOVATION beginning with the verve and imagination of Black girls and ending with pioneering tech that helps everyone live better
  • JUSTICE through active solidarity with Black girls to fully access and seize resources and opportunities to thrive
  • IMPACT that propels and affirms individual lives and communities, thereby shaping industries to do the same
  • JOY that beckons, connects, and surges us toward excellence and possibility

About the Role

As a key leader in the organization, the Vice President, Development (VP) will work with the Development team to create a bold development plan and fundraising strategies to allow Black Girls Code to meet their expansive growth goals and increase their impact. Coming out of the pandemic and racial reckoning, BGC received an influx of funding and support and the VP will be crucial in rebuilding that momentum and reintroducing the organization to the world. The VP will build and execute thoughtful strategies in service of the organization's $6M goal, which is a part of an overall budget of $10M. The VP will also develop and lead BGC's efforts to enhance current and generate new programmatic and unrestricted funding, ensuring that the organization has access to all the necessary resources to reach their ambitious goal of placing one million Black girls in tech by 2040. Through leading and supporting the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual, government, corporate, and foundation donors, the VP will own driving efforts to broaden the donor base and revenue streams.

Team Management

  • Develop, lead, attract, inspire, retain, and manage diverse, talented, and high-performing direct reports, to ensure that the mission and core values of BGC are put into practice by holding everyone accountable for quantifiable high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results
  • Foster a shared vision for the important work BGC does—making the most of the staff's collective talent in support of organization-wide success
  • Provide the infrastructure, processes, procedures, and systems that optimize efficiency and productivity; recognize opportunities for innovative cross departmental solutions

  • Serve as a lead fundraiser for the organization, alongside the Chief Development and Partnerships Officer and CEO, successfully balancing the role of coach, mentor, and leader of the development staff
  • Create strategies to secure new partnerships with corporations and corporate foundations whose marketing and business needs align with BGC strategic initiatives, spreading awareness of the organization and its brand
  • In collaboration with the Chief Development and Partnerships Officer, identify and lead new business development opportunities in potentially untapped markets
  • Secure and maintain highly productive and positive funder relationships, tracking clear and timely records of contacts, donor history, and notes from donor meetings to ensure proper stewardship
  • Work closely with the Development team to steward, retain and upscale partners at the $100,000+ giving level across all revenue streams while managing a portfolio of 100+ plus donors
  • In partnership with the team, support reviewing and approving research and profiles on prospective individual and institutional donors as well as create briefings for funder meetings to support the Chief Development and Partnerships Officer in securing larger opportunities
