About the Role
What You'll Do
Public Rights Project is looking for a strong team player to join us as the Director of Institutional Giving and grow our work with a broad spectrum of foundations investing in our work. This individual will develop and execute strategies to prospect, cultivate, solicit, and steward institutional funders on behalf of PRP's strategic priorities and serve as the lead grant proposal and report writer for the team.
A natural and collegial team player, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of working collaboratively in foundation relations, with an eye toward designing and executing on a robust fundraising strategy across foundations. Working closely with the Chief Development Officer and Senior Development Manager, and external consultants as needed, this person will help design and execute a fundraising plan to grow institutional funding from $5.6 million to $7.6 million in 2025, a 36% increase.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned fundraising professional and strong writer with a proven track record of growing grant revenue. This is a great opportunity for an equity-focused leader passionate about advancing civil rights by working with local governments.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Developing, managing, and maintaining an active portfolio of 30+ institutional funders and prospects capable of awarding grants from $100,000 to $500,000 annually
- Working with the Program team to achieve fluency in and remain up to date on PRP's priorities, reach, and impact
- Leading and/or managing the research, preparation, drafting, and editing of institutional funding grant proposals and reports
- Synthesizing complex information into clear and compelling narratives to secure funding and tell the story of PRP's impact
- Partnering with program, communications, and operations staff to gather information and materials to share with funders
- Using Salesforce (our CRM) to manage the grants pipeline and maintain accurate and up-to-date funder records
- Coordinating with the Finance team and Senior Development Manager to ensure the accurate and timely fulfillment of grants
- Partnering with the Senior Development Manager to continually improve the execution of our institutional giving program
- Modeling PRP's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging

- You will report to the Chief Development Officer and collaborate with a growing development team of three employees.

Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
- At least 10 to 12 years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit fundraising with foundations and/or demonstrated transferable skills
- Bachelor's degree or any equivalent of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position
- Proven track record of cultivating, soliciting, and securing $100,000+ multi-year grants, with specific knowledge of private foundation grantmaking and philanthropy more broadly
- Exceptional ability to convey complex ideas in a clear, direct, and lively style (both written and verbal)
- Strong writing acumen, with an eye for attention to detail and the ability to translate complex topics into compelling and digestible narratives
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, especially with writing and content creation
- Confidence and poise to interact regularly with foundation executives using all forms of communications (email, phone, video conference, and face-to face interaction)
- A self-starter who enjoys working in an all-remote environment
- Experience working in a legal advocacy organization, government office, and/or national network preferred
- Exceptional project management, planning, and organizational skills, with the ability to meet deadlines
- Passion and commitment for helping local governments to use their power for good by protecting and advancing the civil rights of marginalized communities
- Commitment to the mission and core values of Public Rights Project, especially DEIB

The salary range for this role is $135,000 - $170,000.
