Freedman Consulting, LLC, a mission-driven consulting firm, seeks a skilled Strategy Director to help drive the development and design of new programs that support city-government efforts to harness resources and develop innovation capacity with the Bloomberg Cities Insights Unit.

 

 

The Strategy Director will join a dedicated unit of content development, research, and strategy professionals working in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies' Government Innovation (GI) team to:

  • Uncover, distill, and produce intelligence that keeps the team and its work at the forefront of what's happening in cities; and,
  • Inspire local leaders to adopt new, effective ways of working.

The Insights Unit is part of a growing team within Freedman Consulting, LLC. The firm is composed of almost 50 staff members and offers strategic consulting services to foundations, nonprofit organizations, and public interest coalitions, partnering with many of the nation's leading philanthropic institutions. Our work includes strategic planning and issue landscaping for major foundations, campaign advising and coordination for coalitions, and policy development for a variety of advocacy and political campaigns and spans topics including public-private partnerships, economic mobility, criminal justice reform, and technology policy.

 

Primary Responsibilities

The Strategy Director, Bloomberg Cities Insights Unit, will work closely with stakeholders, supporting and driving strategy development and planning; conducting strategic research; and generating insights for testing and designing program concepts for public-sector leaders. They should have experience and demonstrated success in strategic consulting, balancing multiple priorities, and supporting and advising clients towards their goals—all in a fast-paced environment. They should possess an interest in, and enthusiasm for, local government and how innovation can help city governments work better.

 

Primary responsibilities for the Strategy Director include:

  • Shaping and refining new program concepts, working closely with the client to advance initiatives from idea to launch
  • Conducting strategic planning and program design, including researching opportunities, identifying potential partners, and mapping timelines and roadmaps
  • Structuring and leading research efforts, such as landscape analyses and deep dives into emerging ideas
  • Developing clear and compelling communications, including memos and presentations for executive audiences
  • Collaborating with partners and stakeholders on research, convenings, and other program development activities, helping to manage projects as needed
  • Tracking sector developments to share relevant insights on programming, grantmaking, and government innovation with client leadership

Qualifications

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 10-12+ years of experience in strategy development, preferably with a strategic consulting firm or in-house with a philanthropic or private-sector organization
  • A master's degree in a social science such as public policy, political science, business, economics or management; or equivalent professional experience
  • Proven track record of designing, leading, and managing complex strategy and research projects
  • Experience in managing contributors/teams to generate strategic insights, design programs, map stakeholder-governance, and develop metrics/KPIs
  • Exceptional analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and synthesize multiple data and information streams
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to develop strong narratives and distill complex information into clear, compelling insights and produce compelling frameworks
  • Skill in creating documentation and presentations materials (i.e. memos, presentation slides) for senior decision makers and executive audiences
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, track, and meet deadlines for multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfort with ambiguity, resourceful in identifying and navigating obstacles, and able to approach complex issues critically and strategically
  • Strong collaborative approach and demonstrated success working internally and externally as a valued thought partner to clients to optimize program success
  • An interest in local government and/or public-sector innovation

 

Full salary range for this position $150,00 - $170,000 In addition to base annual compensation, Freedman Consulting offers a comprehensive benefits package and discretionary annual bonus based on individual and firm performance. The firm"s comprehensive benefits package includes healthcare coverage, a 401k profit sharing plan, paid vacation, personal and sick leave, and other valuable benefits. *Freedman Consulting employees based in Washington, D.C., and New York City follow a hybrid work (remote and in-office) policy. This position requires in-person collaboration at least twice a week and there will be occasional travel. The firm's hybrid policy values flexibility and seeks in-person collaboration when it will be most beneficial in serving client, project team, or firm needs
