The Okoa Project connects people to the healthcare they need by collaborating with communities to engineer context specific solutions. Since its inception in 2016 at MIT and incorporation as a nonprofit in 2018, we have developed two motorcycle ambulance designs with community partners in Tanzania and Ghana and introduced processes, organization, and professionalism across the organization. Now as we continue to grow, we are gearing up to expand our Board of Directors. Lack of transportation is one of the major reasons people around the world are unable to access medical care. In most rural areas, neither the funds nor the vehicles exist to navigate the terrain to the clinic without exacerbating the patient’s health issues. The exact number of fatalities, crippling injuries, and neglected treatments resulting from these problems are unknown, but the maternal mortality rates can show insights into the breadth of the problem: 830 women die of preventable pregnancy complications...
