The National Coast Guard Museum Association is committed to building a world-class Museum in New London, CT that will not only honor the heritage of the U.S. Coast Guard, but also provide to the public a gateway to discover Coast Guard life. Interactive exhibits, programs, public and private partnerships, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)-based educational programs and leadership training opportunities are expected to be a formidable part of the Museum experience.

The components of the Museum will reflect the missions of the USCG curated in three themed areas of Safety, Security, and Stewardship explored through the following five story lines: Defenders of the Nation, Enforcers of the Seas, Lifesavers Around the Globe, Champions of Commerce, and Protectors of the Environment. Museum programming with these story lines is being developed through a thoughtful planning process. The Coast Guard story will be showcased in various galleries, exhibits, and immersive and tactile experiences that bring to life the heroism, bravery, and devotion to duty of those who serve.


Summary of the Role

The Foundation Relations Manager (FRM) is responsible for all aspects of the NCGMA’s development activities with corporate and private foundations in support of the $150 million capital campaign to build the Museum in New London, Connecticut. The FRM will develop and implement a solicitation strategy that includes prospect identification, cultivation, proposal writing and stewardship.

As the project advances, the FRM will pursue programmatic support from corporate and private foundations.

 The ideal candidate must possess:

  1. Knowledge of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies specifically for corporate, private, and family foundations.
  2. Demonstrated ability in writing and executing successful grant proposals for varied sources.
  3. Knowledge of methods, practices, and procedures for obtaining information about the giving programs of corporations and foundations.
  4. Self-­ÔÇÉmotivation and discipline to regularly set and achieve work goals.
  5. Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  6. Ability to initiate and build relationships with prospective corporate and foundation donors, interacting via virtual or in-person with institutional representatives.
  7. Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for diverse number of projects and to complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision.
  8. Proven record of success in generating significant commitments from corporations and foundations preferably first commitments at the six-figure and above level.
  9. Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
  10. Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and Raiser’s Edge, or a comparable CRM.



Must have 5+ years of experience in foundation relations and grant writing for non-profit organizations, preferably related to capital projects with grants of six-figures or more.

  1. Must be an experienced researcher, familiar with identifying foundations and corporations throughout the United States that meet the stated criteria for the NCGMA.
  2. Must be experienced regarding various grant writing formats including letters of inquiry/intent, proposals, progress reports, and concept papers, as well as the development and packaging of supportive documentation.
  3. Must have experience cultivating and stewarding foundation directors and program officers at corporate, private, and family foundations.
  4. Must have experience in and demonstrable success at working with program staff and the development team towards establishing and achieving identified fundraising goals.
  5. Must demonstrate the capacity to evaluate and make informed and independent decisions regarding strategic approaches to each funder and for each funding need.
  6. While an integral part of the Development team, this individual must be self-motivated and goal-driven and must be able to work with a high degree of independence.

Reports to: Director of Development  

Location: Remote, with the expectation of occasional travel to New London, CT.

Estimated Pay Range: $70K to $90K based on experience level
